Italian Vogue March 2012 | ‘over the top or Ghetto Fabulous

Joan Smalls is intentionally “over the top” (as the hashtag implies) on the cover of Vogue Italia’s March issue. Photographed by Steven Meisel this crazy/tacky/kitcschy/awesome “Haute Mess” cover for Vogue Italia  cover March issue has finally dropped. It features Joan Smalls, as shot by Steven Meisel, and is appropriately titled “Over the Top.” While the full inside editorial isn’t on VogueItalia‘s site yet, there are a few more gif’s, including cover girl Joan Smalls’.

What is really significant about this cover–besides the crazy styling–is the fact that this is the first time in almost four years that a model of color has been featured on Vogue Italia. The last time a diversity appeared on the Italian glossy was back in July 2008; Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, and Liya Kebede covered the famous “All Black Issue.”

Franca Sozzani has been proud of her use of diversity in the magazine over the years. In February 2011 she commissioned an editorial called “The Blackallure” featuring models of color in a fashion spread. Let’s hope this cover signals other fashion mags (including you, AmericanVogue) to feature more diversity on their covers.
